Underperforming 855 2.5 20v
HELP !!!!
This saga began about five weeks ago, when my 855 2.5 20v auto stared sounding different. After the first frost of the year the Lambda Warning light came on and I took it back to my independent specialist, who diagnosed a faulty Lambda Sensor and dodgy air pump BUT it had a new air pump last year and they didn't think that could have gone in a year so just replaced the Lambda sensor. It was still not right so I took it back and we found an extremely knackered piece of pipe and that was replaced, but it is still not right, so we reset the ECU and it was slightly better but now it's performance has deteriorated markedly. I took it back this week and the computer is still showing the air pump fault but the garage don't think that explains the drop in performance. IT JUST HAS NO GO, I have tonight driven from Cambridgeshire to my parents house in Derbyshire and it struggled to get to 70 on the M1 and A14, it would not pick up speed (the 40-70 dash, in sport took over 25 seconds and the stop start of the A14 was great fun, not! My 1.3 Skoda Felicia goes quicker !) and 4 up with luggage felt downright dangerous at times. Fuel consumption has dropped from an average of 30 to just over 23 and once in Derbyshire going up and down the hills is painfully slow. I have bought a new air filter to put in as it feels very athsmatic and will change that tomorrow. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what might be causing this ? It is going back to the garage Monday as I was frankly terrified at times tonight. I have read some posts on here about auto box torque convertors and don't think it is that as, although the gearbox is very reluctant to kickdown, it seems to do it's job properly. Any advice, before I drive back to Cambridgeshire on Sunday, would be gratefully received. Rob Laycock 1996 855 SE 2.5 20v 1991 460 Turbo (non running) |

AS you have a known fault (with the air pump system) then I would tackle that first.
I would suspect the SAS valve is leaking and needs to be replaced see: http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/airpump1.htm You could try removing the SAS valve and fitting a blanking plate on place of it to prove the point. |

RE: Underperforming 855 2.5 20v
Chris,
Well, if it only that's all it had been! Turned out my cat had disintegrated and was blocking the exhaust, so the exhaust gases were blowing back into the engine as fast as they blew out ! That is why the air pump couldn't cope and that fault kept showing. I am now £400 lighter (we did not go for the genuine Volvo part) but my baby is better and goes like a rocket (in economy)!
