Default 6 volt dwell revisited

I'm not sure that I fully understand what is being said here. Can someone please re write this in a clearer manner. I must be having a senior moment.

Connect the power wires from the tach/dwell to the 12 volt battery, then, add a ground wire from the 12 volt battery to the engine, and connect the sensor wire form the meter to the negative post on the coil. read dwell/rpms, set accordingly.

That says to me:
  1. Connect the dwell meter to the 12v battery
  2. Connect the dwell meter to the -ve terminal on the coil,
  3. Connect up a lead from the -ve terminal on the 12v batt to a suitable earth on the engine of the old car

But I don't understand why you can't use a normal dwell meter on a 6v
