Default Air filters

Is there really any difference between a K and N air filter verses a standard Volvo air filter?

I’ve fitted a K and N on my ‘98 V70R and no difference as far as I can tell.

K&N are more expensive but they can be washed and re-used. Some say they breath better.

What difference did you expect there to be?

Now that's the sort of image that springs to my mind when talking about K&N filters, serious petrolheads put a big pink filter on the top of their engine in a chromed holder so everyone can see that they're serious. The K&N filter listed on their website for my car is just a rectangular one which is a straight replacement for the Volvo one hidden inside the air intake box, others have suggested using a cone shaped one inside the box, but nobody could see and be impressed by either of those options.

The difference is the oil that goes on the K&N filters gets sooked onto the maf and contaminates it.
Back in the days of carbs some standard filters were quite restrictive out the factory and the upgrade could help a little.
But now... waste of time

If you're going to do it - buy a Pipercross or K&N panel filter. Cheaper and better than a cone filter, though I only bothered doing it when I knew my standard filter needed changing.
