Yes, over-riders.
There are at least 3 types, earlier ones for the small bumper cars can be fitted above or below the bumper. A Volvo accessory, but standard fit on South African built 164s, as in this photo. Larger full over-riders for small bumpers. Not sure where these originate, maybe US market only standard fitment. (Sorry for the small photo, best I could find on a quick search). Really massive US over-riders for the big-bumper cars! John |

The overriders are common in the U.S. Haven't seen any come up on Ebay recently. 164 bits other than drive train parts are getting pretty scarce here in the states. Are you looking just for the front or front and back? I'll keep a look out for anything.
Someone you could P.M. is Saint John. He's restoring the 165. He may be able to get some. I was able to get a pair of fogs from him about a year ago.

Do over riders give more protection?
I might be getting an LPG conversion and I have heard a few horror stories of what happens to LPG cars when they are in accidents.
So I guess rear over riders are what I need. But finding this picture now....I dont know. Over riders might not be much help in a situation like this. There was no information with this photo, which is a shame. Last edited by s7s7s7s7s7s7s; Jun 4th, 2011 at 23:17. |

I forgot I had these tucked away in the garage until I saw this post. Unfortunately my 164 has the 'cowhorn' front bumper and they don't fit. I intend one day to alter the cutouts by butt welding/grinding/polishing steel to make them fit and then have them chromed. They were supplied from the factory with a tough paint finish not chrome.
Edit: I've just noticed these overriders are not for the big US style bumper as the cutouts are too small but there is a small protrusion in the cutout which would dig in to the rubber strip on the other two types of 164 bumper. Obviously not 164 parts then !!! Maybe 140? Last edited by sainthonore; Jun 5th, 2011 at 22:34. |

Could be 140. What are the part numbers. Looks like the cutouts are for the rubber strip on the thinner bumpers. The first version of overrider was like a -half- bar which bolted on to the underside of the bumper, flush at the front. Nothing on top of the bumper. Have a pic somewhere from the accessories katalog. Might buy these of you if you want to sell...

The LPG is a lot safer than a petrol system. With the 164 the LPG tank should be mounted over the top of the axle directly behind the back seat. The tank is fitted with an automatic shut off valve to stop any LPG leaking when the engine cuts out. It has an overflow sensing valve that shuts the tank off shuold the pipe get broken. In the event of a fire the LPG will give a controled burn, the valve will slowly release the gas stopping itself from exploding. Once a petrol tank starts burning that is it the whole thing goes up. If you are concerned about safety get the petrol system removed! |

I think they're for the 1973 140/164 bumpers, which are the slim type but with an indent in the middle of the rubber strip. John |

Oh thanks for that I didn't realise the straight slim bumpers had the ridges. BTW the part numbers are 284012-2 front and 284013-0 rear.
