Default Ecm 6200

Hi all, I have a fault with my 2006 xc90. The car had been standing a few weeks with no faults showing when parked. I went to start it and found ECM6200 code showing. I had the alternator checked at a local auto electrical shop.
They said it needed a regulator and pulley. I fitted it today and the same fault is still here. The battery warning light shows as it should before starting then goes out as it should. It is not charging before or after the light goes out. After about a minute the warning light comes back and stays lit. This is what it did before I took the alternator off for repair. I checked the voltage at the alternator output terminal and found 11.9 volts. The voltage at the small ign fed wire is around 8.8 volts. I checked the feed plug to the cooling fan but couldn't find any bad connectors. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks John.

Sounds like you need a new alternator (or battery, of course)

Did you have to jump start the car after it had been sitting?

Cheers

Dave

I didn't write that too well, the shop recon the alternator with a new pulley and new regulator I fitted it but it was no better. The small ign fed wire to the alternator is down at around 8.8 volts but the main wire is 11.9 volts. The battery is on charge at the moment. I hope the mice are not to blame as we have had vermin problems before. I have Vida by the way.

Had a word with the repair shop they said its a smart alternator. I was going to feed the warning light spade with 12volts to test the output but thankfully I didnt.

changing the pulley would not affect the alternator charging...
Code ECM 6200 indicates the alternator is too hot... and to replace the alternator.
The small wire on the alternator is a digital data communication line not a warning light control wire as older cars might have.
you probably require a VOLVO alternator which deals with digital control signals. .

Thanks Dave I have already seen that and done the tests as I mentioned before, in fact he was the guy I bought the Vida dice from. Vida tells me the reman alternator has a mechanical fault just as it did before I had it repaired.

Can anybody tell me what voltage I should see at what I used to know as the D wire (the small wire fed by the ign switch) on the alternator. I am getting around 8.5 volts with the engine running. John.

It's a digital data signal you need to look at it with an Oscilloscope it will be switching on and off a 12v line very fast so if you measured it with an a multimeter it could be correct ( some average voltage between 0 and 12v )

The alternator overheating code has only one path, change the alternator for a correct volvo one.
