RTI satnav not reading
Hi all,
2003 V70, the RTI has decided not to read DVDs for a while. What I did think was odd is it makes a noise for a few seconds after taking the DVD in. Any ideas what this might be or what to try to fix it? Or if it is normal for the unit to make that noise? At the very least, it knows when the drive is empty, but when there is a disc it simply says it cannot read disc, it doesn't seem to distinguish between a map disc and a general disc any more. |

You may have luck cleaning the lens or as in our case carefully cleaning the disc - our 2005 model often doesn't read it first time and seems to like a clean disc.
But at 15 years old DVD technology that wasn't that good to start with may be dead and you'd need a new unit or disc or both. Not worth it as you can buy a satnav or phone app for far less. |

Thanks, I had suspected as much and didn't want to believe it. I can burn a clean DVD and hope it's compatible, but the lens is definitely as clean as I can get it.
If it helps anyone reading, it is like a lower, faster spinning noise for 5 seconds after the disc is drawn in. |

I bought a working unit off eBay, pulled it apart and swapped the internal drive unit. The electronics are coded to the car, so you can’t just swap the entire box.
It’s worked fine since, so may be worth looking round breakers, but you’ll not how long a used reader will work for. |

I might have to try eBay then, local yard only has one V70 and it's without nav.
I've noticed that the ribbon cable attaching the laser to the PCB doesn't seem to go into the PCB housing very far either, anyone know if that's a common thing? If not, that's an obvious place to start a fix. |

This one would be a good bet as it's got a sticker from Central Services, which repairs them, so the unit should be in good shape. Shame though that they can't be swapped as whole units if reggie is right.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-V70...FNwP:rk:5:pf:0 you could ask them how much to repair: https://www.centralservicescaraudio....igation-repair |

Thanks Marc, I've sent them a message so they should respond in the next few days. With regard to buying a donor unit, I'm not massively confident with electrics but I know my way to the laser and back in one of these, hopefully that's all it takes.

It turned out to be the silver clip that connects the laser to the worm screw that had become buckled. Forced it back into shape with some pliers and now the lens moves across the disc as it should.
Guess I'm now in the market for the final update disc for MY2003 RTI system... |
