To be honest I've always found my diesel to be a bit revvy. About 2900rpm at 70 according to the rev counter. A 3.31 diff got that down to around 2700 (original is 3.54), gave me another 1-2mpg and made it a bit quieter.

That's very interesting...I did wonder whether a different ratio diff would help. Did changing the diff alter performance off the line much?

How that would translate to a similar increase on a diesel i'm not sure.

I am fortunate to have a local family tyre firm (Martins Tyres) where I live who have supplied my tyres for many years. Locals and those in the know liken fitting new tyres at Martins to an F1 pitstop as they have several bays and use industrial strength trolley jacks!
I always go for a medium range tyre. For many years I have fitted Champiro 195 x 65 R15's on the 745 and find them very good in all conditions (South East!), long wearing with a very acceptable road noise on all types of road. On the V70 I fitted a pair of Nexen 205 x 50 R16's on the front for the MOT in January. The car had Nexen's all round previously which seemed OK so I kept with the more modern version (N'Blue) of the previous ones. No problems. Bob |

There is only one motorway hill I've found where it can't maintain 70 on the cruise with the taller diff. But I don't remember trying it before the diff swap |

I have Continental Eco Contact 6 on my 940. I have achieved 36mpg over a couple of tanks albeit driving carefully and 60mph on the motorway. Can't fault them but only done about 5k on them so far.
I have the latest Michelin cross climate on the xc70 and can't really fault them either, quite impressive. I had Michelin pilot sport 4 tyres on a quick project car last year and they were the grippiest tyre I've ever experienced. A few years back when I had a v70 i was getting best part of 40k from a set of pirelli p7 but they were not particularly grippy, especially in the wet / cold |
