Revs
Hi all, Hope one of you can help. Seems with the cold weather the car has developed a little fault. Before anyone asks no fault codes showing.
Seems that when I get to around 4000rpm in 4th the speed increases but the revs hold at about 4000, this happens till I hit about 90 (on my PRIVATE road) then the revs start to increase any idea's anyone? Cheers all Iain I |

Got to be an autobox problem I'd have thought and there isnt much you can do other than change the fluid. Normally the problem is the other way round ie revs increase and speed doesnt which could be a worn torque converter.

Have a look at www.volvospeed.com in the maintenance section. There maybe some info there that will help. You could also try posting your problem there as all the 850s are autos in the states. Or just search the forum.

Iain,
sounds like it could involve the torque converter lock-up. There have been cases reported on the US Volvo forums relating to auto gear change problems in cold weather due to solenoid failures in the 'box althought, from memory they mostly affect not changing out of first. These can be replaced without taking the box out of the car as they're situated at the bottom front of the box behind a removable plate. I think there is also a system whereby the lock-up doesn't function until the gearbox oil has reached a certain temperature. Could this have any bearing on the problem?

i also think maybe lock up, the engine will normally spin faster that the gearbox when not in lock up and slowly the gearbox will catch up and the lock up.
not sure about the temp issue, yes the tranny wont lock up at temps below 20-30c but even with my 3 13 row coolers my tranny still locks up on the motorway in cold condition. and as you only have the std cooler setup theres no chance of your tranny running cold. i suggest a few good atf changes to keep everything clean and fresh. |
