Default Boot Lid Open Message / Boot won't open

Hi All,

I have a Volvo S40 2007. About two weeks ago, I noticed all the following things happened at the same time:
(1) Boot lid open message on dashboard (when boot closed)
(2) Lights in the boot are very dim and are on even when the boot is closed
(3) The boot usually doesn't open when I press the boot release catch but does occasionally.
(4) Number plate lights are very dim but get much brighter when I press the boot release catch.

I've seen the posts about broken wires in the wiring loom and have tested the length of this - bending it etc - to see if it fixes the problem - but it doesn't seem to.

Any idea what it is? Is it still likely to be the wiring loom?

Regards,

Mark

It's not a big job to check to loom, mine broke in the flex between boot lid and body.No way to check without seeing the wires themselves.

Symptoms suggest wiring loom.

Easy to fix (if you can get the boot open).

If not loom then look at micro switch and associated bracket (reg plate lights etc) as that often goes.

Again easy to fix and cheep (around £14 from dealer). If you find you cannot get the boot open undo the boot handle - there's a couple of torx screws near the reg lights iirc - and make contact between the two wires feeding the microswitch. If it opens you will then know its the microswitch....

99% chance it's the wiring loom. I wrote a replacement guide with pictures here: Replacement Guide

Thanks everyone for the advice, yes it turned out to be the wiring loom.

I purchased a new wiring loom and thanks to the guide from Snoodini, it turned out to be very easy to replace. Saved a more than a few euros by doing it myself.

I just opened up the old one - a completely severed cable inside the the rubber tube at the point where it enters into the boot lid.
