I treated all the rubber seals on the convertible with Gummi Pflege. I had never heard of it, but the lads on Pistonheads speak very highly of it. It is a specialist treatment for rubber and apparently rejuvenates, protects and makes it supple. Now I do like my rubber to be soft and supple so gave it a go.

It comes in a little 75ml bottle with an integral sponge applicator, a clear liquid that is so easy to apply and dries almost instantly and invisibly, leaving the rubber with a satin finish and looking like new.

Having done all the roof, door, boot and bonnet seals on the C70 I then did the same on the V40 and 'er indoors Mini Cooper. Still had a little left over and took under an hour for all three cars.

Looks good and time will tell. It is made by Wurth and I have had good results with all their other products I have used, so feel confident it will live up to expectations and £7 well spent.

Hi all. Hi treated all the rubber seals on the roof and doors etc with the Wurth product as mentioned by ITSV40.
My product came badged as "rubber fit"....but I noticed there was a genuine Wurth sticker on top of the original.
To make sure it was the correct one....I peeled it off and underneath it said "Gummi Fit"...so it's the same product.
Very easy to use....and I used it quite liberally....over several applications, and still have 50% left.
A bonus was, when I raised all four windows, the squeaking noise has disappeared, so a good job done !
In particular the seals on the metal cover that sits over the roof stowage were a little brittle in parts....so was able to give those areas a good application.
Thanks again to ITSv40.....a useful job done !
Best wishes
Dave

As a tech at VW we used to use a similar sounding product on the Eos folding hardtop seals, this however was priced at around 60 quid per 50ml bottle. The seals had to be cleaned with warm soapy water and dried off, all traces of muck/moss/mild etc removed. Then you used your finger tips to massage the solution into the seals. The roof had to be left in the service position (half opened) for a minimum of 6 hours for the solution to do its job. As you can imagine everyone dodged this job like the plague...😂 No idea why the actual product name was as it was just in a Vw bottle, but I can honestly say it worked wonders and truly plumped up the seals and made them feel supple and basically like new again.

I got a new key cut at Timpsons. I'm £59 poorer but have a spare key for the first time since 2012, three cars in a row have come to me with only one key.

That is really worth knowing.

Does your 850 key have a chip in the original key?

The reason I ask is that our local branch in Hempstead Valley cut 3 dead keys for a 2005 C70 but couldn't read the chip code to clone it last year. However, they did manage to identify which chip was in the original key.

I know Timpsons acquired a load of readers last year when the bought out another repair chain may be not all the branches got the same chip reader and software.

It is a chipped key, and the new one does start the car.

I tried to get a key for my last 850 (96 TDi) in the St Andrews branch and they could read the code but couldn't make any of their blanks accept it. They advised me to go to the Glenrothes branch because they had the facility to plug into the car, but it would cost quite a bit more. I didn't do that because it was edging towards the cost of going to Volvo- although I didn't do that either.

This time round (for the 96 2.5 20V) I went to the Glenrothes branch and the guy was doubtful that he'd be able to do anything, and didn't mention connecting to the car, but his machine said it could be done and this time it was right.

I don't know whether the success the second time round was because it was a different branch, because it was a different car, or because the first guy was doing something wrong. My son now has the TDi and will be trying the Glenrothes branch soon, so we'll find out.

Richard TD - good to know, I phoned a key cutting place and the lady said ‘no, only Volvo can do Volvo keys’, ended up spending a fair bit at Taggarts for a replacement for my dad’s V40.

I remember when you had your TDi when I spoke to you in Fife, I had my T-5 estate, still have it but needing some work for going back on the road. Have another T-5 estate now too.

Hi all.

Well, filled up at the garage this morning, and while standing there I noticed how dirty the inside of the filler cap flap was!
I have a few days off until I start new job, so gave it a clean and the difference is amazing !

(I did the roof stowage trunk in the spring).

Also treated the plastic cord that attaches to the cap with the rest of my gummi, as it was a bit dry.

I know I know.....too much time etc....but I am of sound mind and will be back in work soon !!!

Plus, some of you may have gathered by now, I'm pretty fussy about keeping her in tip top condition.....

Cheers, Dave
