To be fair I think everyone is concerned about the Chinese cars which fail the crash tests so spectacularly.

The inference is that the same "highly skilled workforce, producing a large proportion of the worlds goods, from computer chips to cars" which built those death-traps might also be engaged in producing the "shiny new Volvo" as you put it.

The point I was making is that Volvo design and specify a car, gather components from around the world, and bring them together to be manufactured in China. The inference that a Chinese made Volvo would be inferior, given that Volvo would also be responsible for the quality assurance, is unproven.

To equate a KungFu-brand phone to an iPhone, designed in America but assembles in China, is a specious argument, not to mention xenophobic.

Of course, China is capable of making crap cars. Whether they make a crap Volvo is another matter. Personally, I doubt they will be any different.
