Question Odd miss-fire on every cold start......

Hi all, i'm new to this club, and new to volvo's.

I have a 1988 volvo 740GL with..wait for it..! 42,000 ORIGINAL miles on the clock, i checked with previous m.o.t's..no advisories or odometer fiddling on this car i have....the 74 year old guy only did 400 miles per year in it..

anyway, when the engine is cold it starts perfect as anyone would expect, but a minute after starting, the cars revs drop to 500 and the whole car is bouncing and juddering, the whole engine is shaking violently as if the car is missing on one or two cylinders...the poor motor mounts look like they're taking a real beating...the exhaust stinks super rich of petrol, even smokes too now and then, but it revs up fine, though once warm or 5-10 minutes into driving off, its fine, though i'm getting 130 odd miles to half a tank of petrol and the exhaust smells rich even after a good run, (no catalytic converter, lead replacement petrol)

Was wondering if anyone could shed light on this for me?

many thanks in advance!
