Metal pipe goes to intercooler ( I think ) there are a few different types of intercooler ( some go into top some into middle ) so you will have to put reg/vin to check what kind you have. Your one looks like it goes into middle

The adjusters have locking nuts on the front (they run in the slots), loosen them and then in the end is a long 10mm bolt (if memory serves me right on the size) this is the adjuster for the tension. Tension it then tighten the locking bolt again. You will need to release oil all the mechanism as it’ll snap the bolt head off the 10mm if it’s too stiff (I’ve done that and put two nuts on the end to replace the head).

You might need to slacken the pivot point too before adjusting, just remember to tighten them again after.

What the others said ^^^^^ and as they hinted at, i've held a long term belief that Volvo fitted whatever they felt like depending on the time of the month, phase of the moon and the result of the entrails of a sacrificial Fiat - or goat, depending what came to hand!

In other words, a lot of stuff is "suck it and see" so while we can always give you pointers as above, sometimes you will find yours are slightly different. Sometimes even stuff that looks the same is different when you get down to the nitty-gritty.

All that said, someone, somewhere is having a Toffee Crisp - errr, sorry, flashback to a tv ad of the last century - someone, somewhere is going to have seen the same as what you have and will be able to give precise details on it.

Meanwhile, as mentioned, plenty of release oil, especially on the M6 adjuster bolt (10mm head) as they have a habit of rusting in place. Once doused in release oil, try turning one way then the other, you may have to do this several times to get even one complete turn on it, gradually extend/increase the amount you can turn it by until it runs all the way, adding release oil as you go.

Takes a bit of time to do it but is less frustrating in the long run than dealing with a sheared adjuster bolt, leaving you no way of adjusting the belt properly!

It was a sad day when the more-or-less unique Volvo microfiche data for each car as manufactured was binned by Volvo and never to be retrieved again!! Regrettably, I only have a few photostat copies pertinent to my 745 given to me by the Main Dealer. Bob.
