I have a D4 not a T5 but I'd be surprised if the same logic didn't apply, I just tried this tonight:

1 - car in D, stop/start active, engine not running > if you open the door or unfasten your belt the engine immediately restarts, you get a warning chime, a warning message on the display and the parking brake is applied.

2 - car in N, stop/start active, engine not running > if you open the door or unfasten the seat belt same thing as 1.

3 - car in P, stop/start active, engine not running> if you open the door then the ignition switches off and the car goes to sleep, parking brake is applied.

It doesn't seem possible to leave the car with the engine off in a stop/start active state without it immediately re-starting and warning you as per 1 and 2 above as soon as you open the door.

The only other thing is someone is goofing around with the remote start in Volvo On Call app, but if you're car isn't keyless then I don't think you will have On Call?

Something fishy is going on here...

Incorrect, I don't have keyless entry, but have all the On Call functionality.

However, as you said, not in Park, car doesn't switch off.

On mine if you're in park, the engine isn't running (stop/start active) and don't touch the start switch, when you open the door the car automatically turns off the ignition and applies the parking brake. Thus the engine cannot re-start.

Assuming yours operates the same way as mine then the only other option I can think of is someone is activating remote start via On Call. Does it keep a log of actions on the app?

Seat belt being unfastened appears to deactivate stop/start, which leads me to a question:-

If someone drives off without the seat belt fastened, other than getting the annoying chimes, does this stop the stop/start activating ?

A bit late to the discussion.. but experienced similar the other day.

Came out of a shop with my twin daughters to find the car was running

Got in the unlocked car and it was sat there in drive with the auto handbrake on.

I had pulled up, and not taken it out of drive. Turning the ignition off didn’t work as not in neutral, walked away and clicked lock in my pocket (poverty spec) and of course it didn’t lock either because it was running (stop/start off) and in gear.

Anyone could have just got in it and drove off. Won’t do that again...

On the older MK1 cars you could stop the engine while in gear but it would not let you restart it until you put it in park, I think they have changed this to not stopping until in park so that you can start the car with remote start, via the VOC app, this would not work if engine was stopped with it in gear.

For me the scary part is that you can leave the car in Drive, with just the autobrake and get out of it. There should be at least a chime when you open the door to place car in either park or turn it off. This is what my wife's humble golf is doing which I find it a very safe notification.

I’m not sure that it doesn’t.. kids were (as usual) giving me grief so it could have shouted at me and I’m not certain I would have noticed!

A few months ago I drove to drop them off at school - they’re 6 so I walk in with them.
Parked and couldn’t turn the engine off - message came up on the dash telling what I had done wrong but it didn’t register at all..
Thought the gearbox was broken and asked another parent to walk them in.

Then I noticed it was still in drive.. Not sure I’m clever enough for this driving lark!!
