Its no changing up very consistently against a steady throttle. Most autos do this until they learn what youre doing. Usually takes a few journeys to understand what youre doing with the throttle.

On reflection, its not really the transmission, the engine mapping is different, its providing more torque from a lighter throttle than it was and my driving hasn’t fully adapted.

Why do we have to go to the dealer?

My computer, TV, Blue ray player, heck, even my washing machine updates its software over the internet.

Why not the car? It has enough forms of connection.

It even has a system update tab in Sensus. But no, I have to wait for up to a year when the thing is in for a service.

I think you've answered your own question. SERVICE = MONEY.

I can, and have, booked an appointment with my local dealer, whenever I want my software updated. Free of charge. You don’t have to wait a year.

Unless you want to, of course.

Although it was planned to offer OTA updates it has never been implemented.

There are various reports of updates not going well while at the dealer and in some cases leaving the car 'bricked'. If this can happen at the dealer's think how much worse it would be if an update failed while you are somewhere else.

Tesla do OTA updates but it seems that Volvo's software/update process hasn't reached a sufficient level of maturity to allow it.

Sensus app updates (which are relatively simple and not in any way crucial to the running of the car) go wrong more often than they should and on that basis alone I wouldn't want any other updates to be done OTA.

Yes, I agree.
In post #2, I mentioned that my V90 was in the dealership for a few days for software update.
I had a recurring problem with Sensus crashing and their first attempt to update the software failed.
I had to leave the car with them until Volvo issued a further update to try.
