Like you, I'm surprised that the car is not designed to check that the key is not still present before re-starting the engine in start/stop, but I've seen this happening before (my father did exactly this with his new Renault), so I believe it's possible and not only with Volvo.
I think that's what's going on but I'm also not locking the car as I walk off. My previous car was keyless. I think I try to lock it but may be hitting the wrong button or not pressing it hard enough. My little one likes to be carried so I'm probably getting distracted.

Whatever is going on I need to get a handle on before someone helps themself to my car.

The engine is off when I get out but I think it starts itself again to preserve battery, like it does if you're just sat in it.

Surely the car should realize the key is nowhere near and just shut down instead of starting the engine. I'm assuming someone could jump and drive away.
Keep meaning to ask. Is it D5, T5, T6 or T8?

I always look at the car when I lock it, the flashing turn indicators confirm the locking.
You may consider adding (some of) your car's specifics to your signature.

It's a T5. I have put it in my details but can't find how to edit my signature.

On top of the page, on the second row, click "Quick Links" (on the right side, next to "Log Out")
Click "User Control Panel" and find "Edit Signature" in the list to the left.

Because of where I park at home - private drive some distance from and well out of sight of the road - on a hot day, I sometimes leave the car unlocked with the windows open.
But it’s never re-started by itself, presumably because I make sure it’s fully turned off at the twist knob.
However, I will try ‘forgetting’ to switch it off properly to see if it replicates the problem.
Also, and probably not relevant here, but I don’t think the car needs the key for remote start using the app., although the doors and transmission remain locked.
So, if there is a fault, could be related to this...?

I'm not a Volvo owner (yet) so forgive me if I'm wrong or you have a petrol, on my current A4 the DPF always kicks in at the wrong time, pretty much when I am parking on the driveway even after a long journey.

My neighbours have come to me a few times to tell me that I left my engine on but it was just the DPF doing it's thing, very loudly.

Could it be that?

I have not long been given a diesel car and have not experienced the DPF doing anything yet.

What happens when it regens that would make it sound like an engine running? (It needs fuel from the engine to burn off the particulates, so surely the engine must have to be running to do a regen?)

Regeneration happens when you are out on the road doing about 50 mph for a length of time , It happens about once per tank of fuel . What could be happening is that it has not finished when you get home and all the exhaust is still very hot ( 600 C ) so it WILL keep the engine cooling fan going for a while to get rid of the heat when you park up .. Are you shure it is the engine or is it a whooshing whirring sound ? It is a large fan ... you can almost feel the suction if you stand in front of the grille .

The OP has answered this in post #9 I think.
