Default xc90 d5 awd starting problems

hi, I am not used to forums so i will give this a go, I have a xc90 d5 awd, over the last month this issue has been getting worse, when i go to start the car it sometimes does and then it doesn't, I have checked the battery and this is within the parameters of the voltage needed, when you turn the key sometimes it turns over and starts and other times just the dash lights come on.
I have checked the starter relay and this has been replaced. I have connected a live feed to the starter motor and this starts the engine with no problem. I have tried the gear stick in P and N position to see if there was a sensor that might not be working to know the car is in the correct position. Im guessing the issue is with the wiring from the ignition key to the starter. or could it be a problem with the ECU unit.
How would i be able to eliminate the different stages between the ignition switch and the starter motor. Cars these days seem to have to many sensors that im sure will be the cause of this.

You eliminate very quickly by reading the stored fault codes with VIDA

That is always Step Number 1 (before you touch any hardware)
