Default Missing Hose? Help!

I have a 2.0T V40, it's been running fine but when I opened the bonnet to change a bulb today I noticed this!

This part was still attached to the bit you can't quite see:

Am I right in thinking this is a bodge anyway and it should be a rubber hose linking them?
No idea when it happened, but concerned I am at risk of a stone or whatever being sucked into the engine and doing serious damage? Is there something I can do until I get it fixed properly?

Apologies for all the questions, I am clueless about engines and have been greatly helped by people on here before.

Nice photos.
That standard corrugated aluminium pipe runs warm air
to the air filter box when things are cold
Google it.
Volvo put it there
Some imbeciles on here would suggest you don't need one
The same imbeciles would also suggest you only buy Volvo parts

Your car will not particularly suffer until you buy one

I bought a generic one for mine

That's really helpful thanks, put my mind at rest.
I will replace it but won't panic about driving it in the meantime now I know it doesn't mean air is getting in unfiltered
Had literally no idea what it was, but can now see it comes up quite often here.

Happy Diver is there any need to refer to the forum members as imbeciles? You state that some 'imbeciles' say you don't need one of the pipes, yet go on to contradict yourself by stating that the car won't 'particularly???' suffer without one? What's that all about?

The pipe is to feed hot air into the intake on a cold morning to speed up warming of the engine and fuel efficiency. Replacements are available off ebay by the metre, you need to measure the tube at the manifold end to make sure you get the correct diameter tube.

It will come compressed and it needs gentle stretching to extend to the correct length, also handle with care as they are very fragile.

I guess I am one of those imbeciles on here then. This hose will make such a small (if any) difference to the daily running operation and economy of the car, I am not even sure if it is worth replacing.

Under-inflated tyres or a poorly maintained engine will cause much more severe mpg loss than this silly little hose.

More use on cars with carburettors on freezing mornings, had an old Seat Ibiza conk out on the way to college. Carb full of ice, 15 minutes later the heat soaked through & away it went. Didn't realise you had to turn the air filter into winter position which would draw hot air from over the manifold.
