Hi Stephen

I'm like you I thought it was four years and willing to stretch to five following the advice here. However I think 8 years is optimistic and I would not want to go that long, having been bitten in the past with one failing at 7 years.

Both

If it helps, my own car's history includes some early years (1990s/2000s) servicing by Volvo agents Riverside Motors in Doncaster

Two key services include the following wording:

Carry out 50k mile/5th year service (& 100k mile/10th year service) including scheduled replacement of the engine timing belt. That gives you the belt change interval

It also tells you that the recommended service interval is 10kmiles/annual

Riverside are still a Volvo dealer so no reason to doubt their paperwork - it is all Volvo branded

(my car had only done 10k miles in 5 years and 17.5k miles by 10 years (astonishing) but not necessarily a good thing - there are pointers to gearbox problems back then)

So gents as both of your cars are similar age vehicles to mine, I think that tells you the interval. A few other things:
1 Haynes recommend 48k/4yrs
2 Other forumers point out that you don't know the age of the belt when you buy
3 Do you buy OEM or pattern?
4 You may choose to do your belt more frequently - it's not just use that degrades it, it's also the environment. Personally, I'd not let mine go past 5 years - you need to consider the consequences of failure balanced against the relative cheapness and ease of changing the belt

Hope that helps. Nick

Nick's olde paperwork confirms "what I thought I knew" : five years. Now where the devil did I learn the five years from?

Having bought the car 4 years ago and one of the jobs was to change the timing belt, I am confident on leaving to the recommended 5 years.

I used a Volvo belt and will do so when I change it again next year.

Yes I use the Volvo belt, from a dealer. Good price. Has marks to help with fitting. And. Is likely to be of the right specification, one hopes.
