"Check Brake Light"
Hi my 52 V70 has started messaging me everytime i apply footbrake. I have checked replaced all bulbs, the led works as do the upper brake lights. the stop/tail lights do not. I am puzzled as they work on DRL? any help greatly received.

we need the exact symptoms , what exactly are and are not working? You say the upper brake lights are working then say the stop/tail lights are not , a bit confusing ...

Ok, alllow me to clarify.
car has DRl so under normal conditions rear lights are on these are the ones that have a stop / tail bulb fitted and are housed in the lower cluster. When the brake pedal is pressed a message appears "check brake light", wife is pressing brake, i am at rear of car looking at and led and two brake lights one either side in the upper cluster. the ones in the lower cluster that are stop/tail lights do not work. ie the tail light does not get brighter. |

so basicly you are saying the two main stop lights don't work .
The LED is controlled direct from the front of the car whilst the two main stop lights are controlled by the Rear Electronic Module behind the left side panel opening . I would guess it is the relay , usualy coloured blue at the top . Swap it with one of the other black ones just to confirm ....

the blue one is normaly the brake light relay , is it clicking when the pedal is pressed? If so it's most likely faulty!

If i understand this correctly, when the brake is pressed the top LED brake light lights up as do the brake lights in the top section. In the bottom section the lights are on as the DRL's are on but brake lights arent?
Ill think youll find you only have brake lights across the top part, the rear lights in the lower section are just your running lights. What bulbs did you use?I have had this problem when using Halfords bulbs.Swapped to bulbs from a motor factors and problem disappeared. Hope this helps. Ben. |

they are halfords bulbs, but they are double filliment ones as were the originals, i assumed that they were also stop lights, i have checked all the relays. i wonder if they double up as fog lights, will try in the morning. the halfords bulbs were a pig to fit as you had to force them in, seemed like they were no long enough.

Hi,
I wouldn't bother with halfrauds bulbs... Get decent bulbs like Osram or Phillips... Des. . .

So it seems there is no problem after all , you have two bright stop lights and a centre LED ???
The bulbs below the stop lamps are dual filament but only the Right is used for Fog lamp . They are special off-set pins so maybe you have forced in the more common in-line pin dual filament bulbs ? Always best to use volvo sourced bulbs they have the longest life span ...
