Default Peculiar starting/running problem on 440

Hiya,

I've got a 440 (M-reg) which has been running a bit rough recently. I suspected there was some muck in the carburettor as it has previously run low on fuel.

However, it recently failed to start, despite a good battery, etc. I could turn the starter for ages, but only when I let go of the key would it briefly attempt to fire (but obviously fail).

The temporary solution has been to disconnect the HT lead, leaving about a 1cm gap between the end of the lead and the coil. So now it starts ok and runs fine - but this is obviously only a temporary solution, so can anyone help me pinpoint what might be wrong?

Cheers,
James

Default Ht Gap???

I don't know the volvo coil system but I have had the same "almost firing " symptoms when releasing the key problem which turned out to be the coil due to a resistor which allows more voltage to the coil at start. The HT lead gap may be giving the resistance that has been lost.

Regards
