Assuming that it is the renault gearbox ..?
The oil filler is also on the front of the gearbox (radiator side ) about halfway up the housing ,& is usually a plastic plug which can be loosened with pliers, unless someone has changed it for a metal plug ?
Yes, the shaft on the left when sitting inside the car looks as you describe.
I had barely room to crawl under the car so I never saw the other driveshaft.
Yes, the filler plug is white plastic and located just as you describe.

Regarding the seal,-is this the correct part?

Worst case scenario: I'm in need of taking short trips with the car as I'm moving from one place to another just a mile apart. If the box kicks the bucket because of these short trips I found a car salvage company that has an impressive amount of used volvo boxes for very reasonable prices.

Since the first time I noticed the whining noise I have been driving about 500 miles.
The box must have been low on oil since the sound first appeared and when coming home from a 370 mile long trip I discovered the box was bone dry.
I'm surprised, because the gears seems to work just as always. No problems getting into the gears, not jumping out of 5th gear etc.
A few more short trips and I'll leave the car alone until fixed.

Thanks for the help.
Now all that is left is crawling and tinkering.
