What mileage can I expect from my car?

Hi,

I have a 64 plate 2015 V60 D2 (1.6 diesel) SE Nav with 82k on the clock. The car has a full service history (x6 main dealer and independent since - 9 in total). The car does mainly dual carriageway during but also motorway and some urban. I currently do 18k a year (I bought it second hand with low miles three years ago).

Just wondering whether four more years is likely (making it past 150k) or if it will be likely to become very costly to run…

Look after it, keep the oil and filters fresh and it should easily do that. If it’s well driven should be fine other than usual wear and tear items like brakes and suspension thanks to our loverly British roads.

If you have it serviced properly and don't neglect it, there is no reason why it wont go on indefinitely, the vast majority of volvos still do 40++++ years later. What leads to problems is cutting costs by letting untrained "technicians" look after the car as they do not know the service schedules and methods . Not using genuine volvo parts is a big problem brewing in recent years I have discovered with huge numbers of volvos over the last 47 years !

1) a large british pothole takes the car out early
2) an impossible to find gremlin fault exhausts your patience & funds ! resulting in you calling webuyanywreck.com

If its maintained properly, it should do that with ease. That doesn't mean you won't have niggles on the way though. You just have to expect that a car with higher miles can have problems... things wear with age, its just natural. Doing 18k a year is exactly what that car was built for though. It sounds like its getting regular motorway trips, which is good for the DPF.

Keep the services up and you should be fine.

Servicing is good though 18,000 miles or twelve months between checks is a long time.

Keep an eye underneath on the shocks, boots and gaiters.

Shock bodies do rust, my car is four years older than yours and the rear shock bodies are showing signs of corrosion, no leaks but will still need replacing this year. A split CV boot or gearbox seal is better fixed sooner than waiting for the servicing garage to spot it.

If this is the PSA engine also found in the Ford Focus I'm well placed to tell you.

I've owned a 2008 90bhp 1.6tdci non dpf version since 2013. I bought it with 77,000 miles, it turned 211,000 today. With dpf, regular oil changes are key. I've serviced mine pretty much in line with Ford's 12/12 schedule. Still on the original turbo. Original exhaust. The engine rattles and kicks out a fair bit of soot under acceleration but still passes emissions.

My personal aim is to see if i can get 300k. I'll let you know!

As for 150k - easy! I also run a 2014 focus dpf 1.6 tdci on 159,000. They are incredibly reliable if looked after. I did recently have a lower engine oil leak which was a days labour to repair (£500) but both cars owe me very little now.

With any make or model of car regular servicing is key. I had a 360GLT cover 270,000 miles without any issues and a 2.0lt V40 370,000 miles again without any issues. In both cases the body rotted before the mechanics gave up. I do all my own servicing and am fastidious in approach and don't skimp.

We bought a 2007 Mini Cooper for 'er indoors with 40,000 miles on the clock several years ago. It is now on 107,000 miles and still going strong. It is the non turbo N12 engine and if you read online reports you would never touch one. Timing chains collapse at 50,000, cats give up at 70,000 - if you are lucky, sooner if not. Oil leaks are impossible to cure, pistons implode etc, etc, and it goes on and on. With these engines it is important to keep the oil level topped up as they do like a drop to drink. Service interval is 18,000 miles and as a lot of them are driven by young women, never get the oil checked between services - I suspect many are run practically dry.

I changed the timing chain at 100,000 miles - not because it needed it, but just in case. The cat did give up at 102,000 miles and it did develop a couple of oil leaks which £37 worth of new gaskets and a day of my labour completely cured. Apart from the above and regular service items it has been a remarkable little car and one we both love.

The heater fan did become noisy at around 70,000 miles - a common issue, but a new fan cured that. Only down side was the dash had to be completely dismantled to fit. The dash doesn't come out in one piece, but every single item has to be dismantled in a set sequence. That was three days work for me as it was the first time and I didn't want to break any tabs etc. Attachments show the extent of the stripping and finished job. No tabs were injured during the fitting process
