Default Mot.

Hi all just wanted to share my news of passing the mot in my new to me v70 1999 manual estate, first chance i got to have a look underneath and it aint to bad.it struggled on the emmissions test?turned out there is a very small leak on the cat right in the middle but the guy plugged it with exhaust paste,so Co and Hc were fine just the lambda test wouldn't drop below 1.048.after plugging it up it passed with 1.027 lambda,Co% were 0.004 and HC ppm were 0.that was the fast idle test results.
He voiced concerns about the reflector in the offside headlight but it passed so no actual advisory.
He seemed to think the car was a good one so i'm a happy chap.
I can relax a bit now until the 740 is due,but there again that just flies through it no trouble.
Brian.

Well done. Its just a relief these days to get an older car through a test.

That paste wont last long in the cat though ;-(

Thanks ,yeah i know but it was good of him to do it to get it through.
A new cat or a more permanent fix will be added to the shopping list. The list is getting longer by the day.cambelt and tensioner, aux belt, offside headlight and rear pads and disks and most likely a service too.
It won't be all at once but will get there eventually.
FRF rufe will be getting a phone call soon for some prices so i can save up enough.
Anyone had a recent cambelt kit,aux waterpump for a v70 as a rough idea of price?

Hello,
Great news
The headlight reflectors are the Achilles heel of the car, start looking for a pair just now while you have time on your side.
Plus it literally is night and day when you change the headlights, the reflectors are not available on their own.
I believe a genuine timing kit is around £180 - I'm not sure if that includes the water pump though.
Cheers

If money is tight it may be best to try a 2nd hand gen Volvo cat and concentrate on the cambelt / water pump first ?

Top advice IMHO, that's definately the way I'd go. I've never found an after-market Cat that had more than the absolute minimum of precious metal catalyst in it, and they never last more than a few years and you're into replacing it all over again, usually with a whole load of emissions problems leading up to it. That's why they're cheap, but you get what you pay for.

And a Volvo one will fit with no hassle.

Cheers!

Mot should not be a problem really if you are prepared to get in there and examine stuff and repair if necessary.
The standards are highish nowadays but thats life.
All the information on test proceedures and standards expected are on line in the VOSA testers handbook there.
Of course you cannot do dynamic brake testing, but if you know your car you will know how it performs, also bright discs are a good sign of performance, rusty or irregular bad .You can also test for binding by just applying the brake then releasing and spinning the raised wheel.
On emissions, you can buy a simple OBD2 reader from Amazon (about£20) which will tell you what is going on.
The rest is all simple inspection.
If you do an inspection now and then anyway, then you will know in advance what is going to be needed.Good light and sharp eyes is all that are needed.
Also,a tip here, pressure wash, brush, and spray up the works. It looks so impressive to the tester!Mine looks forward to it !Look upon the test as a chance to shine!bournricha

Hi and thanks for the comments.
The hole in the cat is so central in both planes it almost looks like it is supposed to be there?maybe a drain hole?cannot imagine a cat having a drain in it but some silencers have had drain holes from new! They haven't got a lambda probe each end measuring the ratio in and out though!

Cambelt is a definate as once it's done i can relax knowing when it's due,the serpentine belt is showing signs of cracking on the lined part(inner). So i wonder how old it is and is the cambelt the same.

The guy who does my mot's also enjoys my cars as he can see the work i do and knows i have knowledge.he goes on about the newer cars that come in that are basically death traps! Throw away items driven by uncaring people.

.
Totally agree - do it and you know where you are. It would be very unusual for the timing belt to be replaced and not have a new aux. belt fitted at the same time, so if the aux. belt is looking cracked and tired, then chances are the cam belt is the same, so good call to change it soon.

Cheers!
