Exclamation Stall on deceleration

Hi all,

My 140,000+ mile 440 has been getting a bit jumpy lately, to say the least. Typical example: unexpectedly slowing at a roundabout. When going down on the clutch in 2nd., trying to 'taxi' along, the car shudders, all the lights on the dash come on, and it stalls. Car restarts without fail.

Another prime example: coming off a Motorway and slowing from 75 mph. Popping car into 4th. at, say, 45 m.p.h. the engine shudders, lights on dash all come on, and it tries to stall ( though coming off the clutch sharpish keeps it going ).

The engine is full of jizz, and while the car ticks over slightly rough it seems at times, nothing major. It accelerates like a rocket, but coming off the power suddenly seems to do it. This problem has been bugging me for about 2 months now.

Any good ideas much appreciated.

Thanks!

Anthony.

Cool Engine stalling

My s40 has the same problem. Sadly it has had a good service and did not sort the problem. Numerous suggestions given to me. One was idle speed control valve, temp control sensor. I'm now onto fuel filter! Hopefully that will sort it! I'll let you konw.
Cheers Alex

Smile Thank you!

Thanks Alex, I'd certainly be interested in knowing! I'd say my '94 model has much higher mileage, but the really annoying thing is, apart from this problem it's perfect. Feels like it'll go for another 140k. at least!

My father mentioned 'high pressure' and 'low pressure' ( talking about the weather ). As he once drove a Renault 6, I diss him. I'm beginning to wonder though ... the car does seem to run flawlessly depending on same.

Many thanks,

Anthony.

Cool 440 stalling

Hi there,

Don't think it's a carb. model ... seem to remember the dealer referring to the engine ( Renault ) as B18F or U. It's a 1994 model ... February ... which I guess would've been a few months into the 'new' shape. The engine is 1.8.

Dealership is no good anymore ... they recently told me ( when I tried to book my 480 for a service ) that they "Don't do cars pre - 1998"! However, I was invited to check out the C-30 ....

Regards,

Anthony.

Hi,

Sounds suspiciously like fuel starvation for some reason, had an issue with my 240 years ago which liked to splutter when taking the foot off the gas..

My fault as I had mis-appropriated a spring!!

So your dealer doesn't touch older cars? Obviously not you dealer any more..

Smile 440 splutter

Thanks both ... yeah, car dealers in Ireland tend to sabotage older cars, so I'm probably best off avoiding main dealers anyway. It's a case of "Hey, he didn't buy a new car and help make me richer, bloody cheek".

The car's a single point injector ... I did give it a shot of REDEX, though this was after I put 50 quid in the tank, which probably wasn't the best way of doing it. It's running perfectly today. Dead weird. Has it's good days.

I think at this stage I must be carrying a bagload of bad Karma some days ....

Cheers.

Question Wobbler today

Hmm. Things went fine today UNTIL I bumped over one of those nasty speed-ramps in a car park. Car began to splutter, and died. It did the same under heavy braking later on ... or rather, tried to ( lead foot moment! ).

It dawned on me that, a few weeks ago, I was driving one night and all was well until I hit the biggest mutha of a pothole. The car getting a bump seems to set it off. It's bloody dangerous really, gearing down and coming sharpish off the clutch when it does a wobbler.

Was thinking maybe a short circuit, but I'm no electrics whizz. Anyone tell me where to look? Earths? Most common electical glitches someone like me could fix?

Thanks as always.

Anthony.
