Default Painting advice please.

Getting ready to paint engine bay with color coat. Unfortunately i am having to use rattle can paint and once the hardener has been mixed in I need to use it within a day.. Do I need to rub down with each coat of paint or is that a waste of time? The finest wet/dry I can get here is 1000 grit.

Make sure that your primer coat is as smooth as you can get it with no scratches from rubbing down with coarse paper. Make sure that your paper/s are left in the water for an hour or so to soften them up. a splash of dish soap will make the job easier. 1000 should be fine enough but if you rub two sheets together they will go finer, maybe 1500 or more. Don't go overboard with the coats. 2-3 fine coats and them maybe 1-2 slightly wetter should be fine without any rubbing down. If you aren't going to clear coat it then leave for a week in the sun to get the paint hard before attempting colour sanding. Just compounding will bring up some extra shine if you don't want to use wet and dry. Be careful of edges as they can sand through very easily especially with new paint.
