To Webasto or not to Webasto that is the question

The Webasto sunroof if fitted correctly and with the perspex wind deflector has few drawbacks.
Whilst I would not cut a hole in the roof now, if the hole was already there, I would always continue the benefits.
In the mid 1970's I had a Webasto fitted to my MGBGT V8 and it made a otherwise very stuffy car a real cruising pleasure. The wind deflector is a very important item to have.
My 1964 built Volvo P1800S had a Webasto fitted presumably sometime during the late 60's or 1970's. By the time I bought the car the inner lining was missing and there was no wind deflector.
Having gone to considerable trouble to get the parts I needed and with the help of Simon and Keith at Templar & Wilde this was re-installed. There have never been any leaks in 4 years and when open there is no flapping noise or turbulence. In fact there is considerably less noise than having the side window open.
I have now had three cars with sunroofs, and not had leaks or staining of the inner lining.

Thanks all, the petrol smell is only a comment from my wife, she drives a ‘modern’ 2009 Audi and of course it practically drives itself, she thinks my car is noisy and smelly 😂. I don’t mind it in fact hardly notice it but it is probably some unspent fuel from the carbs as I’m tight everywhere else.

I had a 164 with a well-worn Webasto back in the 80s. Lent it to a Dutch guy but it was no longer there when the car came back. He said it came off at 112.

I think it strongly divides opinion Nathan - much like Brexit ! I personally wouldn't buy a car with a cut roof, but there are others who love them. Apart from the cost, there is also a potential vandalism issue. If you're going to have a Webasto then go to Steve Cramp in Lewes to have it done as he specialises in this work. As you say, around a couple of thousand at least. I would prefer to spend some of this on improving the performance and dynamics of the car.

Same happened with my Web-Flap-Sto roof on an ,ahem, Allegro (don't snigger). Not at 112 though. Still Gaffer taped in place when I sold it to an Allegro fiend weeks later. A thoroughly nasty invention best consigned to history.

My wife also complained about my 1800S being noisy and smelly, so I fixed the smell problem, which was a missing foam seal where the steering column goes through the firewall and invested in soundproofing. My wife thought the change was dramatic.
