Default Damp causing misfire

My 2.0 Highlander (nonturbo) has started coughing and spluttering so I changed all the plugs, cables, dizzy and it all seemed to settle down but following the recent rains it has started again. I suppose the next on the list is the ignition module but guidance would be appreciated.

The symptoms are that when I am driving unless I have the throttle open - under a bit of load - then the car splutters and misfires and sometime drops 1 or 2 cylinders....and I've only got 4!

also the tickover is variable going from 500 to 1000 and also the rev counter does not always seem to sense what is actually going on - is there a sensor somewhere that might cause this?

Help would be appreciated.....

Well just for info the problem became a little less intermittent and when my wife delivered the car to the garage the fault stayed around long enough for a diagnostic code to appear - the air mass meter is apparently the culprit - I will find out tomorrow if this has finally sorted it - here's hoping

I would imagine your 940 would be on LH2.4 so the main suspect would be the AMM, however thats not to say that the flywheel sensor couldnt be playing up.

However you described the rev counter sometimes not reading, well thats indicative of a hall effect sensor failing in the distributor.

When you were changing the dizzy cap, did you notice a small plug going to the bottom of the dizzy??? These are a common failure on 700's, but as mentioned above, i'm pretty sure all 940's were on the LH2.4 system which doesnt have this.
