volvo 240 front wheel bearing adjust

can anyone give me advice on front wheel bearing

adjustment.My adjustment is forever loosening, making the car
lack precision.Wheels have been balanced, bearings regreased, correct size split pin etc

If the split pin is undamaged then either you have the wrong wheel spindle fitted (very unusual) or your bearings are not tightened correctly in the first place. Have you replaced the correct washer under the nut. This should have an inside tab which locates in a slot on the spindle thus preventing rotational forces from the bearing being transmitted to the nut.

I think it is quite normal for bearings to take a while to settle in.I have often found with a variety of cars that I have to re-adjust the bearings quite soon after doing them.
It seems partly related to the lack of precission setting provided by the holes/flats for the split pin, so the hole never comes at just the position one would like. Obviously the correct procedure is to set it loose rather than tight, but this does mean that when the bearing beds in a tiny bit it is then too loose.
My solution, which I have applied for years to several cars, is
a) grind the washer or try a different one if you can't get the setting you want.
b) don't take any notice of the end float settings, but do it by feel. Adjust the nut with the wheel on, and tighten until wobble is almost but not quite eliminated. Recheck when hot just to make sure you haven't overdone it.
