Default Self-adjusting clutch installation

Hi all,

I was warned last night that I might have dropped a clanger with my freshly installed (but lightly used) clutch, in that I hadn't pre-loaded the self-adjusting pressure plate. I've tried searching, but have got conflicting advice.

It seems that the pressure plate needs to be 'set'/compressed to the "fresh disc" position prior to installation (using special tools), and provided that the small springs are compressed (which they were), you're good to go. These small springs were fully extended on my old, worn, clutch. If your new disc has these springs extended, it needs to be set/compressed.

Does that sound about right? At the moment, the engine and box are installed, but nothing else (driveshafts, exhaust, pipework, etc) is attached. If it's gotta come out again, now would be a good time to know. My gut feeling is that because the small springs were fully compressed, I'm good to go, but I'd like some more opinions.

cheers

James

I've decided to press on with putting it back together, as I don't have much to lose. If it works OK, I'll be back on track, but if I take it out now to be safe, I lose any chance of having it ready for next weekend, and I don't have a preload tool anyway. In other words, I don't have much to lose in giving it a try.

cheers

James

It worked fine.

I consulted Haynes, which pretty much said "if the little springs are compressed, it's set....carry on as normal. If not, compress it, to 'reset' the self adjusting mechanism". I took that as reassurance, and pressed on. All is well with the clutch. I just wish everything else was OK!

cheers

James
