so was faffing around today to see if brendan was correct as it would make sense with it not happening till things have heated up. the turbo heat shield seemed ok but i only checked nuts and felt for movement/vibration but when in there i noticed the heat shield for the brake servo (im assuming thats what it is - now bear with me since i make frank spencer look like stephen hawkins)...
https://www.flickr.com/photos/120624614@N07/ ...was missing a nut, could move around a lot and didnt stay in place solid. i thought i had cracked it. i took it out.... https://www.flickr.com/photos/120624...n/photostream/ ...and put everything back. exact same noise still there only now minus heatshield covered in blood maybe i should have took more apart and taken the turbo heatshield off and tried it, though i still have a feeling it may be suspension related as noise changes when weight of momentum of car changes, ie when car is leaning forward when braking lightly or when begin to reverse and weight of engine is moving forward. though what i dont understand is why it doesnt play up so much until heated up for a while. could suspension make noises dependant on temperatures i suppose is what baffles me. anyway if i dont get to the bottom of it i will be getting rid of it as its doing my head in. bet its something simple |

IIRC there are two nuts there that hold the master cylinder in place - at 8 and 2 o'clock. The 8 o'clock one also holds the shield. Open the bonnet , push the brake pedal and watch to see of the master isn't going sideways. This nut went missing from my car at an early age.

Will do, brendan. Incidentally im not sure i was looking at the correct shield for turbo earlier. The one i was looking at was kind of behind the engine a foot or so under the brake servo but i could only see the top of it. This may not be the one you meant. Will try again tomorrow. I have thought of little else and not slept or drank fluids for over a week now my every waking moment is consumed with this rattling noise. Its even telling me not to answer the door or telephone

Hi
Very recently had all engine mounts changed, car came back and we had a tinkling bell like sound on tickover. opened the bonnet and found the top NS engine mount retaining bolt was undone. The tinkling noise was the bolt rattling around in the mount. Luckily it hadnt fallen out and the nut was just resting on the engine. Refitted and perfect. May be worth a check |
