Default Service Costs - Compare With This.

Posted For Comparision Purposes for the UK Members

I just had Service #8 done on my MY2009 XC90 at the importer/main dealer
My car has always been serviced there it's whole life. They have the history.

This is the first service I have paid for since owning the car.
Here in my country (CrossCountry = Switzerland for those who haven't figured that out) we pay more for 'quality' service. So they say.

But the main dealer *does* always fit genuine original Volvo parts.

Here's my costs, in GBP, for comparision with your local dealer.

All figures including local taxes, converted to GBP as this is a UK forum:

Regular service #8
Oil change 5.7L Castrol Edge (152 GBP = 26 GBP per litre!)
New fuel filter (50 GBP)
New oil filter (18 GBP)
New air filter (32 GBP)
New cabin air filter (59 GBP)
Diesel additive (13 GBP)
Misc materials (washer 2 GBP)
Materials: 326 GBP
Labour: 265 GBP

Total 593 GBP (750 CHF) for regular service #8

Brake fluid change
Due every 2 years, been done religiously in the past, I knew this was due.
Materials: 18 GBP (1 litre brake fluid)
Labour: 78 GBP

Total 97 GBP (123 CHF) for brake fluid change

Issues found during service
Front brake pads down to 3mm, suggested replacement, I agreed. I knew they were low, and they sqeaked a bit.
They replaced front pads AND front discs - I was surprised, I though only pads would be done.
You can never go wrong with new pads AND discs.
Very even, strong stopping power now.
Materials: 392 GBP (front pads 118 GBP, front discs 245 GBP)
Labour: 200 GBP

Total 595 GBP (753 CHF) for new front brakes incl discs.

Extra items requested by me
Fix click-clack of front axles. They greased them.
Materials: 4 GBP
Labour: 29 GBP

Total 33 GBP (44 CHF) for fixing the click-clack.

Total Invoice:
Materials: 743 GBP (940 CHF)
Labour: 578 GBP (731 CHF)
Total: 1321 GBP (1671 CHF)

Yes, these costs may be higher than what you pay in the UK.
But a lot of Swiss stuff is more expensive than anywhere else.

I always note to myself that I am driving a vehicle that cost 110,000 CHF new in October 2008 (around 55,000 GBP back then) for which I paid 20% of the new price in early 2016.
That reflects typical depreciation of 10% to 80% of the new price.
And my car is clean, tidy, well equipped, well looked after, and well maintained with a full service history.

If you are in the UK though...

I have had this guy in my watch list since I bought the car, so even if you get it dealer serviced, just pay the labour and add the extra items you need. Might make things considerably more affordable.

You get...
  • OIL FILTER
  • AIR FILTER
  • FUEL FILTER
  • POLLEN/CABIN FILTER

For about £75. You should see if they will ship to CH
