Default 850 Replacement key cost

I had to get a spare key cut and got a shock. Chap reckoned there was a "chip inside" and gave me a bill for £65!
Am I right to put an exclamation mark after that, or is it a reasonable price?

Sorry, but I have to raise a sceptical eyebrow here - this is just the key, the remote fob is not included. This is a 21yo car, the remote function is not built into the key. He muttered something about codes but all that was done was the cutting of the metal. And it worked.
No codes were harmed in the production of this key.......

The chip in the key 'talks' to the ignition circuits via an antenna in the ignition lock.

No/wrong chip and the car won't start.

Unless, of course, somebody found a way of butchering things up to make it work!

And the coding system in the fob for the door locks is a completely separate thing.

You are indeed wrong and it’s a reasonable price.

Get a later car with 'rolling code' chip in the key and you can multiply that price by 4 or 5, the dealers will want £100+ just for the computer coding. Even an unchipped copy key for my V70 which will open the doors but not start the car, cost me about £20 from Timpsons.

I'd wonder if it's a transponder on an 850. Sounds like it was just cutting a key blank to me.
Going to get one cut for my v70 soon, we'll see if it's a transponder on that.

Thank you, everybody.
However, I can't help noticing that the chip/transponder/thingamegizmo worked for my car from a blank that he took from a card without subjecting it to invisible rays, scans etc.
Of course I'm not suggesting that its a hoax.....
