My 2005 XC70, late 04 reg is the 163, Euro3. Since I bought it 6 months ago I've put 3,500 miles on it - a big chunk in Europe and the rest local short trips.

It just sailed thru MOT @ 190,700. Shifts like a dream, doesn't use any oil whatsoever.

Only complaint I have compared to the 2002 V70 I just sold are the plastic headlight covers although with Philips Xtreme Vision +130% I'm convinced the light output is just as good as with the glass fronted headlights on the V70.

When parked at home after the EU trip to Neuschwanstein Castle the mpg readout showed 56.8 mpg, mostly on two lane roads.

For what it's worth, all my Euro3 D5's have returned better than 50 mpg according to the readout - so even with 10% false reading (if it is that much), I am more than happy.

Great car, great mileage..

It's more than 5%, ask me how I and others know!

So, somewhere in between..

Of course, easy to figure exact if you want and care to.

Ours will show 37mpg and calculate at 31, so do the math, as they say. My same year S60, presumably with the same kit does much better mpg, as it should, but its % optimism is very similar.

By a country mile the least accurate display of any car I've owned.

Ha! Mine’s consistently 10% optimistic - shows 34 and calculates at 31.

It’s no worse than the Kia Sportage I had before , but a nicer drive, but much worse than the W 330d that was usually (well) within 5%.

My long term average, over 17,000 miles is currently calculated as 33.1 on Fuelly. The best was just over 38 on a long autobahn run and worst is 28, when mostly driving in and out of town.

I had a look a Fueelly’s records for XC70 D5’s yesterday and it seems the real averages are often between 25 and 30 UK mpg. Nothing to write home about, but lets me feel smug at long term and less bad about winter commutes in and out of Leeds.

I ran a 2004 163 D5 XC70 geartronic for 6 years/75,000 Miles. During that time, the only replacements were the alarm module, a set of brake pads and a front spring; other than that, nothing fell off broke or wore out. Average fuel consumption (calculated) worked out at 32.2 overall, the best being one day when I brimmed the tank, drove 460 miles then refilled the tank with a shade under 50 litres; this worked out at just over 42 mpg. The trip computer always over read by 5%.
The performance was adequate without being spectacular, but it was possible to sit on the motorway at 70 mph in almost total silence.
We used it to tow a 1350Kg caravan and the towing performance was excellent.
I eventually replaced the car with an XC90 and was never absolutely convinced that it had been a wise move; the ‘90 was roomier, handled better and had better performance, but the ‘70 was quieter, much cheaper to run and, in many ways, more practical.
