Default 1997 V70 rubber engine stabiliser

1997 V70 rubber engine stabiliser

I been having quite a loud knocking sound when braking braking sharply at low speeds (in slow traffic movement). Have just discovered that a rubber mounting securing the top of the engine is broken.

If I remove the two bolts on either side, and withdraw whatever to insert another rubber thingy, am I going to see the engine disappear onto the ground!!!

In other words should I have a go, or is an expensive garage job?

Cheers

Hiya,

no it won't fall to the floor. There's 3 other mounts at the bottom of the engine holding it to the subframe. The top bar really only steadies it, it's not so much load bearing.

This is probably a job you could have a go to DIY. Do you want to replace with genuine Volvo, or go for a stiffer polybush aftermarket version? The aftermarket version will transmit a bit more of the 5-pot growl into your cabin but that's not to everyone's tastes!

Cheers, Pete

just so you are aware the standard rubber ones are around £15 pound depending on where you go and they dont last very long maybe 2-3 years but the poly bush is between 20-25 quid depending on where you go and will out live the car and i didn't think the noise increase was that significant best thing i ever did as it improved throttle response too

Remember when you're doing this, it's a aluminium engine block so the bolt torques aren't as high as you might expect. 50Nm into the block, 80Nm through the bush - I'd recommmend using a torque wrench for this (not so expensive anymore - Machine mart sell one for <£20 without sockets - don't know if it's any good). Also being Aluminium you may find that the threads are oxidised a bit so getting them undone may be initialy tricky. May need a nice long breaker bar to get loose to start......otherwise access is good and should be relatively simple to do.

Also, I don't know where you'd get the part for £15. Nordic Parts charge £28+vat and Volvo £35ish so £15 has to be trade - I think I need some contacts like Mario850!!!!

Hiya,

the polybush is much stiffer than the rubber Volvo bush, so more of the engine's vibration transmits through the bush and into the bulkhead, resulting in more in-cabin noise from the engine.

HTH, Pete

The mount most likely to knock (I think) is the mount on the right side under the crankshaft pulley. When it shears off the two metal mount points bang together. This mount is the easiest one to change, should take an hour all in.

The steady bar bush is a common failure point on the 850/70, and the standard item apparently needs to be installed using a press. Big bolshy yarblockos to that, I say! The poly alternative can be fitted by anyone in under an hour using hand tools, which is one of its major selling points, as well as its longevity

Ever since I fitted a Powerflex bush to my V70's steady bar mounting, it sounds like an Audi quattro under hard acceleration. Fantastic!
