I also have the Solex Cisac carb on a 240 GLE saloon. Apart from the need to crank a few times when cold/damp/stood for a while, I have no complaints! When at normal operating temperature - it ticks over very smoothly! MPG for its/age/size/engine is reasonable also! No complaints - other than a need for a new battery this winter.

I'm also a lucky guy I reckon! A beautiful motor! Happy days!

I have a May '87 GL auto with the 230k engine - runs beautifully at 132k miles and averages between 27 - 29 mpg with, on long runs, 31 possible. And yes, it can also hold its own in the outside lane when asked !

No idea what mine is doing..but its not good. It is acceptable on the motorway at a constant speed, but cold starts and stop start stuff murder the fuel efficiency. So I try to avoid both! Mine is running rich though, gonna tweak the mixture this weekend see if it improves any.

this mpg problem seems to be the bigest problem with the 240 series. today i got in touch with dorset lpg for a qoute on converting my car to lpg and they want £1,350 to fit it and although i love my car and have spent a small fortune keeping it in A.1 condition i cant justify spending that much money on a twenty year old car when for a little more i could buy another younger volvo with a factory fitted lpg system. looking through the adverts there are plenty of lgv cars out there. another question i am asking myself is how long would it take to re-coup that outlay. i don't suppose my car would be worth £1,350 if i sold it, thats the problem i am facing at the moment.

Dai Brace (classicswede) is an LPG and classic Volvo specialist, he could probably knock you £300 off that price. He is located in North Wales though. I guess it depends on the mileage you do. If you're doing lots of miles, the cost will be recouped within a couple of years, plus LPG fitted cars are worth more 2nd hand, and 240s are appreciating in value at the moment.

yes i know that he has already qouted me £1150 but i would probaly loose 200 in fuel living in poole and what happens if there is a problem its a long way to go to get it fixed. mind you i'm not to impressed with his service i have been waiting four weeks for him to send me a french adapter for using in france

I have an LPG kit from a Volvo 740 in my garage which I intend to fit "soon" The present MPG for a daily driver is a bit much. 26MPG on a stop-start commute. Not bad for a big elderly barge though. I'f I can get 22MPG on gas i'll be happy!

I know what you're saying regarding balancing the costs with an older car. However, remember that the 240 will use a much simpler and more reliable LPG system than a modern factory fitted type that has to comply with stricter emissions regulations and such. The appeal of a 240 is their simplicity, and I think that unless you're looking to make a profit on yours, and you are wanting to make your 240 better for your needs, why not go ahead? Remember, people waste 10K a year on depreciation just so they can have the latest number on their plate, so in the grand scheme of things, its not that big of a deal.

you are right with what you said redboy so much so that i have decided to go ahead and have the conversion done. going to see the fitters today to book it in. after a lot of thought, and after a year of owning the motor i think i have found a very reliable one and the bodywork is imaculate i think i would be hard pushed to find a better one, and like my old saying and that is if you do have an accident i want to be in a volvo 240!

just an update on my lpg conversion i have booked the car into gas power uk in exeter for the 19th of march, cost being £1500. i went down to check the place out yesterday and you couldn't have met a finer group of people. i was shown around the place and saw how they fit the conversion, shown the tank to be fitted and where items would go, also told about the service cover and offered a courtesy car for the time that they have my vehicle. a real worth while visit, can't wait to have it done.
