Well I have now found the exact problem with mine!......
The Drivers-side Inner Track Rod has severe(ish) play. We got the car up in the air and grabbed the wheel at the 3 and 9 O'Clock positions and the free play was obvious. The steering rack end of this track rod is where the problem is and needs replacing I'm getting a new inner track rod and a new track rod end (might as well whilst we're there). This then should be the cause of the vibration, a 'loose' wheel in effect or where the wheel has movement independently of steering input. I too have the 'pulsating' vibration where it comes and goes in regular intervals on and off. The tyre is also showing unusual tread wear compared to the others. To be honest I've been less than impressed with the suspension on this car and have already replaced the wishbones and two 'stays' on the back, and now this track rod - I've only done 53K miles.

Thanks for the advice on the caliber, I'll give your test a try and see if I can track down the problem as you suggest. Cheers

I have posted this problem under "Vibration". Without knowing if you have automatic or manual gearbox, I can say to 99% for shure it´s the drive shafts. They all have this kind of problem and are very difficult to detect. I have spent over 5000€ changing EVERYTHING, and I mean the whole new front of the car, suspention, rods, triangl mount etc etc. After hearing all the different mecanics saying" well if it´s not that we continue changing". The only thing is that it´s going to cost you a lot of money. Finaly I spoke to a true mecanic in Sweden, and he told me that the drive shafts are a problem with Volvo, but they are very difficult to find out of. But in the moment I told him about the vibrations he said directly driveshafts!

That's interesting, thanks.
I forgot to reply to this but even after changing the inner/outer tie rod I STILL have the problem. I did some research into Focus ST's with the same running gear and Driveshafts were mentioned there too. I cannot rule out a tyre problem yet and the only answer is new tyres but I can't quite justify spending £500.00 until I know if there's anything wrong elsewhere. We're having a better look at it again this week so fingers crossed....

Hello,
it seems like I have similar problem as you guys... The only difference is that I'm getting "wob wob wob" sound from rear wheels at around 30km/h and bellow. I've changed front and back wheels and the sound transferred to the front with slight wobble that I've felt at the steering wheel. So I thought that it's defect tyre. Changed the tyre with one that's left spare from last season (did the balancing again), put wheels at rear axle again, but the wobble is still present... Is it possible that the alloy rim itself is bent/buckled and if is, is it repairable. I've ruled out bearings as it's moving from axle to axle... Thanks in advance |
