Default Shudder?

Noticing a few steering issues on my V70 SE (2005).

1. Steering fluid was low, so topped up.
2. Stain beneath car from something leaking.
3. After starting, turning circle heavy, and mid-way through turning circle, I hear and feel a significant shudder-vibration, which disappears after the car has warmed.

A mechanic I know said I might need to "drain the rack" and refill with fluid.

Comments and ideas welcome. Thanks.

Check the level again post top up and run.

Its probably low again as the fluid works back in to where you had air!

Keep topping up as required and may settle down.

~Mine dod this once and refilled as needed and done 80k post issue

Turn steering wheel to right until it locks. Look to the left wheel, check the long black rubber boot for any fluid leak. Same for the other wheel. The steering rack is known to leak inside those boots.

Thx. Need a ramp to get a decent glare.

Could it be that the "rack" does need drained to rid all the air?

Steering is unbearably heavy; it's taking the joy out of driving my lovely V70

my reservoir bottom hose had leaked and let the oil out.

When mine shuddered I saw foam in the reservoir.

The pump makes oil foam, as partially air. When I filled it a few times it purged itself.

Wrong fluid will ruin the rack $$$

I think it's fluid for chf 202, usually pentosin but prestone also got it, it's prestone synthetic for european cars.

check level in the reservoir. top it up to 1" below the cap.

Don't need the car on a ramp, just a torch. with the wheel completely turned, the plastic boot is exposed. can see if it leaks (busted rack), it can get full with fluid

to burp the air, it takes turning the steering from one end to the other a couple of times, engine running.

Also check the ties on the boots- the closest to the rack (the larger ties). It has to be thin metallic ones. If it's ones with a screw or plastic ties, those let the water get inside the boots and the rack starts rusting and leaking.

No foam or leak obvious. Though, I'm no mechanic.

Might try topup solution.

Thx.

I've very limited car knowledge in general. SO. Would it be possible to post a link to correct fluid?
