Default Stromberg 175 petrol leak

Hi guys, Had a fair leak of fuel from the front Stromberg on my 144 yesterday, pulled the air box off and when started petrol was pouring out of the breather outlet thingy (top left of the carb that the little breather hose in the airbox connects to)

we pulled off the carb and thinking it will just of been the float bowl valve being stuck possibly made it overfill and leak out everywhere?
has anyone else had this before, took the bowl off and I have now cleaned out the valve, seems nice and free now, also recently had black sooty stuff out the exhaust, I'm hoping this will be due to way to much petrol in the mix?

any ideas or opinions welcome!
Cheers

Default Could be

Had problems with float valve many times on many cars. Could also cause sooty exhaust of course. Check the float level - it could be too high.
On several cars I have converted from single Stromberg to single SU HIF - a vast improvement.

Grose Jets! They are brass replacement fuel inlet/float height replacements. They are totally different in design from stock but fit perfectly as they are designed for this purpose. $16 a pair from ipdusa.com. - Scott

p.s. It is not good when raw fuel pours onto the exhaust manifold! Been there...
