Replacing front panel on 1970 144
Hi
It's decision time with my terribly rusty 144. The wings and front panel are rotten in all the usual places and I'm trying to weight things up re: cost of repair etc. It seems that front panels are available new from Brookhouse but they are the later types, with the vertical vents beneath the main grille. I think Volvo changed the radiator position and the size and shape, but wondered if I would still be able to use one of these later panels. My panel (which 5% lost to rust at the ends) is the older type without the vertical vents. Any suggestions would be great Cheers

just answered my own question!!
this from Scandix:- Front section with square holes for the USA bumpers and assembly for the threepart grill. In addition to that there are differences at the fixing of the front wings, trims and the radiator. Using this front mask for other model years is difficult and should be done by a bodywork specialist. poo

The 1970 model year has a Vertical flow radiator easily identified by the top hose coming out from the centre of the Rad. 1971 Model Year onwards had a larger horizontal flow rad with the a longer top hose coming from the side of the rad. The rads were deeper in the front panel as well to aid better cooling hence the grills behind the front bumper. The bumper holes changed from oblong to square on the 1974 model year.

Bodywork specialist
Well, Scandix' definition makes me a bodywork specialist! ;-)
The later model front is indeed slightly different. To accomodate the larger radiator, you will need to cut small bits from the frame rails at the bottom of the radiator. You will also need another cover plate in front of the radiator top. Ans other hoses ofcourse. You will end up with improved cooling capacity. My recent trip through 30+°C Italy proved no problems in cooling. |

Lovely wheels on your 145 - I have an identical looking set of Exactons in Amazon stud pattern. Are yours also 15x6J?

Exactons
Yes, they are Exactons 15x6J. The Dunlop center cap stickers are still waiting to be glued back on. Mine must be just after the Dunlop takeover.
