I'm going to take a stab in the dark that it's a speed sensor... but best get it connected up to VIDA to read the actual fault codes.

Good suggestion - there are two speed sensors on the gearbox - input shaft and output shaft. The output shaft one I think goes out on the wider network from the TCM to drive the speedometer and cruise control. A condition of "implausible input shaft/output shaft ratio" (i.e. a situation where the TCM doesn't think the gearing is correct) will throw a Transmission Service Required message.

The sensors are on the outside of the gearbox and on their own separate wiring loom. I am specifically referring to the AW 5-speed auto fitted to 163 BHP cars, not sure if the TF-80 is the same?
