More jobs!
I planned to change the drop links this weekend but I just found the car low on power steering fluid.
Bugger, is there a known weakness for a leak in the system, top pipes and reservoir are all dry...?

It is possible the line to rust where it gets into the steering rack (2001-2003), or where it passes near the right lower engine mount, or inside the dust boots at the rack.

I have not checked the bottom mount before, if that's knackered would it allow the pipes to get squeezed I wonder?

Not another problem!

I took off the rear wheel tonight to start changing drop links and brake pads, intending to look at the power steering pipes when the front wheel was off and I found this horror! This is the rear trailing arm nearside attached to the car, that is daylight you can see through where the bush should be! I have never changed suspension bushes like these, just done shocks and springs. Is this a job I can do at home or is it hard to change these?

Changed a drop link on my daughter's Audi TT yesterday, took a total of 15 minutes from start to finish, unlike the V70 I did a couple of months ago that took almost an hour

I did this trailing arm 6 months ago. Pig of a job to get the bush out. I used this tool tool to push the bushing out. Bushing itself its cheap but if you have proper tools it easy. Yes you can do it at home. Garage asked me 150 plus vat for this job but then after touching it, they will moan for the stuck bolts (which 99% will happen inside the bush). So I decided to do it my self and all well now.

I have had so much fun this afternoon! The offside front anti roll bar bush is totally shot, it's hanging out! So that's the front end rattle found! The drop links I bought are the meyle HD ones, I do not recommend these! I have fitted the back ones without issue but I have dislodged the delicate rubber boots on both the front ones, the design means you can't pull the spring clip back over the boot. I will have to replace them again with the design that has the torx head in the bolt, a much better design! Maybe Lemforder are like this? So I took the car on a quick run up the road to check all was ok and got a puncture. Happy days, just two trailing arm bushes, front anti roll bar bush and repair a puncture and I'm back where I started!

If it's not actually knocking, you can forestall further decay by cleaning it all up with meths, and then smearing some PU rubber squirt-from-a-tube stuff around it. If you want to go mad, you can paint the arms red while they're off the car, lol.
It's what I did. And it passed the MOT like that too. I'm sure they'll give up eventually, but they're horrendously expensive to buy. Good to know they can be swapped out with the tool though. I considered that, but I've never done one, so I bottled and took the "cheap fix" route first to see what happens. And it was a success. So it's an option at least. |
