You're -supposed- to only fit the spacesaver to rear wheels, for a front puncture put spacesaver on rear and rear on front...

I have a spacesaver and did not know that you should not fit one to the front. It is logical because of having to control the car. The rear will have less affect on this as it is being pulled along. Very good point you have raised.thanks for the solution.

Which is interesting in itself, given 'official' advice to fit new, grippier tyres to the rear axle as opposed to the front.

Its simply down to the narrow spacesaver getting easily overloaded on the front and also not braking straight/safely, afaik.

The logic behind putting new tyres on the back is mainly to prevent the rear aquaplaning unexpectedly and whipping round (as it lighter and you cant feel it as much) then secondarily because you'll notice a lack of wet adhesion or tyres starting to aquaplane much more readily on the front thus will back-off.
There will always be two schools of thought though, as putting new tyres on the front reduces stopping distances and increases general control.
Yer pays yer money....

And indeed a more deeply treaded tyre on the front axle clears water in advance of the rear tyres following quite literally in their tracks, so neither former or latter aquaplane!

I always understood the line to be understeer being better than oversteer for the average driver.

Pays money etc, as you say.

Indeed, though on corners the rear follows a different arc than the front so can run on fresh water, which might be momentarily deeper due to the fronts pushing it aside...

A sharper turn could indeed have that effect.

You would have thought it would say in the Manual but it only has this.
