Default Fuel consumption

This might be of interest, perhaps:

I've just achieved my best-ever fuel consumption, of 37.4 mpg, on a clear motorway run, non-stop, of 150 miles, at a steady 60mph with occasional increases to 65 to pass lorries. No passengers, no other load. Daylight, warm day.
It's a 1990 GL 2.3, with LH2.4 ignition.
By comparison, local journeys, longest trip 10 miles on narrow rural roads, the average is about 27 mpg.

(My best fuel consumption of all time was a Renault 4, which did an easy 45 mpg on short journeys, and over 50 on long runs)

that's how you should be driving , 75 - 80 mph would probably halve that figure due to the huge increase in wind resistance .

In comparison , my brother's V60 did 70 mpg under the same speed conditions ,
Narrow rural roads etc never goes below 44 mpg

things have moved on in the last 30 years after all !

Agreed, but not always easy today on the UK's crowded roads! We had an '81 2.1 DL Auto in period that regularly returned 23 to 25 MPG during mixed driving in the UK. On our first trip to Sweden with it, despite being more heavily laden than normal,we were pleasantly surprised to see it easily top 30. The difference? Mainly long journeys at a steady 55 MPH with little braking / acceleration involved - exactly what it was built for!

Regards, John.

Hi Clifford

I regularly make a similar journey to Derby from SW London in my identically specced 1993 SE and driving similarly get about the same result - If I press-on a bit (65ish) the MPG comes down nearer 35, and if I can bear to drive (late at night) at high 50s, then maybe 38+ becomes achievable

I have an electric cooling fan and a new larger exhaust. My feeling is that on a long steady journey they are not making much difference, but may be helping around town...

Interesting to compare notes...
