Just to throw the cat among the pigeons, my ES has the number on the radiator brace. As it is an early one (chassis number 000669) from early 1972 I'm guessing there may have been a particular date they changed the policy rather than being model specific.

Hi Jim, Reading back through your original post I can offer this info. Use the link Derek posted showing the listing of my poorly ES on the register. Of the 7 photos of my vehicle there are photos of the three plates. This should answer your questions about the layout and type of embossing on the various plates. I can't give you a definitive text size.
One is the main plate from the pedal box, the body coloured plate is the body number and the one with the 2 rivets shows the full VIN layout. I do hope that helps.

I reckon you are correct, changes possibly related to a production date rather than model specific. I've owned two ES's, a 1972 'W' model (can't remember the chassis number) and my current 1973 'Y' model, both had the full VIN number embossed into the door pillar.

I also owned a 1970 E but never had cause to find the number so I can't comment on that one!
