Interesting theory. Just for information the car has covered just over 85,000mls. It had a major service at 74,688mls in 2014 including plugs and fuel filter. A minor service for just oil and filter at 80,328mls in 2017 just before I bought the car in September last. Car has been starting and running fine until the battery failed and of course I have discovered this problem when idling. I believe it was owned by a Volvo owners member at some point, (not the last owner), as it had a owners metal badge on the grill. If it is a problem with oil compression, any cure?

Your engine is still young.......mine had over 150k miles on it when I sold it!

I doubt the problem is a worn engine, but could still be due to the petrol wash down effect Re-remedy - don't turn it off unless it has run for 3 minutes or more after starting. Don't leave it ticking over for a lengthy period - if you do have to run it up to temperature for some reason, blip the throttle occasionally and it should be fine.

Which oil are you using? With the 850 series many people report that semi-synth works best - I only ever used synthetic mine as it had only ever had synthetic oil used in it from new.

I have not serviced the car since I have had it. It will go to VOLVO for a Cam Belt change soon and they will change the oil & filter at that time if I ask.
