Default Slipping clutch ?

Hi there,

Can you please help?

I've had a intermittent slipping clutch for about 3 years.

It comes and goes in intensity - predominantly in 3rd. It isn't getting worse - there have been times when it's been worse than now.

I'm thinking some oil is getting into the clutch area? And not necessarily the clutch being worn, that said the car is on 260k without it having replaced.

Any thoughts? I don't have any burning desire to fix at moment- but am interested to know what the issue is and what the cost may be?

Many thanks

If the clutch and rear main seal are untouched from new at that mileage that's very impressive.
What I will say though is if any oil is getting into the bell housing area it will be leaking out the bottom of it.
Take a peek underneath it and see if any signs of oil leakage between gearbox and engine.

Surely it can't be on an original clutch at that mileage?

It all depends how they are driven. I had a 360GLT from nearly new and scrapped at 270,000mls, a V40 2.0lt bought at 60,000mls and scrapped at 370,000mls both on the original clutch and 'er indoors had a Mk4 Fiesta bought at 7,000mls and scrapped at 180,000mls again still on the original clutch.

It is... I bought it off my parents with 130k on the clock and it wasn't replaced in their ownership.
