I came across this really heavy block of rubber-weighted with lead by the feel of it when i removed the tailgate cover,in order to bolt my number plate after getting it nicked,it is on the o/side and is fixed to the inner skin.I can only presume it is a ballast weight to make sure you don't have to slam the tailgate shut, but there is enough weight in the tailgate to do it itself,so unless anyone can tell me a good reason to fix it back,it will stay off and be a paperweight.

Last thing you want is a resonating tailgate
It would be interesting to know what if any difference you notice.
Car constructors have to adopt a one size fits all approach.
Maybe your license plate light bulbs will fail 10% earlier

Thanks guys,i will probably go with that as i know the inner skin is either fiberglass or some sort of plastic as i had to drill it in order to get access to tighten the nuts with a socket,i did think it weird though if it wasn't there for a good reason, good job i cleaned the rust off the bracket attachment, back on it goes then.

How is it affixed? Can you estimate its weight?
