Default 850 outer cv boot replacement

Hello.
Could any one help me by letting me know how to get front hub off spline (with wishbone, track rod + strut dis-connected). Does not seem to want to move. Is it the 3 spline head bolts on the back that i need to remove ? (if so need some more tools !), seems to be the only thing left.

Hiya,

do you mean get the driveshaft out of the hub? If so, I've had mixed experiences. One slid right out once I'd loosened the driveshaft nut, one came out with gentle hammering on the loosened nut with a wooden drift to take the damage, and one refused to budge until I used a £20 universal hub press and got it pretty tight, giving it light taps to try to shock it free.

Once that's done, you can (if you wish) remove the hub from the steering knuckle. I think it's 4 bolts not 3 (one in each corner) and they were male Torx on mine, but might be different on yours.

I think you are recommended to use metal glue to lock the driveshaft in the hub which is why sometimes it's a pig to remove them.

Hi Kev,

If you've already disconnected everything from the hub except the brake caliper, then the easiest think to do is remove that and take the drive shaft and hub carrier off the car complete. My original NS drive shaft resisted all attempts at removal from hub (including 14lb sledge - destroying the bearing in the process).

I've done a couple of 850's and V70 since and each time now I don't try and get the drive shaft from the hub - just remove the lot in one go.

Yes, it does make it a little more awkward to get the CV joint off the shaft - you need a vice to hold the hub and a friend to hold the shaft whilst you attack the circlip in the joint. But overall it can be a lot less hassle.

Thanks guys for both of your replies. Both very useful. Have not tried puller yet - hadnt thought of that one !! will try that first , and failing that over to your idea Brian of removing driveshaft as well. Should it disconnect from gearbox end easily ? (Presume might as well do inner cv gait as well ).

p.s Doody, these bolts are male Torx as well but couldnt thihk ot right name, cerainly no room to fit a socket on there tho as too close to driveshaft end.

Kev,

Yes, the drive shaft pulls out of the diff. It's splined and has a spring circlip on it's inner end. Haynes suggests using a pry bar against the diff. housing to get the shaft out. Personally, I just pull from the outer shaft whilst helping with a bar - just be very careful about the drive shaft oil seals in the diff. housing. You do have to be very careful however that you don't disrupt the inner CV joint as it can pull apart and destroy itself if you don't realise when you put it all back together.

A sub point to note is that as long as the side you're working on isn't lower than the other side then you don't need to drain any gearbox oil when removing the drive shafts (assuming the gearbox isn't overfilled).

Hi Kev the splined shaft on my 850 was very tight,I managed to get it moving by my wife holding a double ended copper mallet while I gave it a few wallops with a 7LB sledge.Apparently the splines have metal adhesive on them according to Mr Haynes,on reassembly I didnt bother with the adhesive as the nut is torqued to 120nm then angle tightened a further 60 degrees so I reckon is going nowhere.HTH Mick.
