have just been told there is a diferance in the aw50-42le in where the speed sensor is on the gearbox in the early and late models made in 1995.
how do i no witch one mine is? ok i have been told that the one on ebay is the later model one with the speed sensor on the top of the gearbox. i have lifted up my airbox and taken a pic. is this my speed sensor and so does that mean mine is the later model with it on the top? What you are looking at there I think you'll find is the engine speed sensor. The vehicle speed sensor is further round the back of the box going down on 1996 model year. On earlier ones it is even further down the back towards the diff. Look at the Diagram in the 850 technical section under auto trans diagnosis-AW50-42LE

Don't forget that not all AW50-42 gearboxes are the same.
Apart from the difference with the speed sensor, the gear ratios are different between models. You need to match the Volvo part number. |

EDIT crossed posts with several people. Can't remember if there was another sensor further back on mine, and if so how far back. Can maybe check tonight.
Hi, I *think* that is the speed sensor, and it's like my '97 box - on the top. HTH, Pete

ok have just taken a pic of where the vehicle speed sensor would be on a later model and i can tell if there is one there or not as there is a black plastic thing that carries loads of wires going over the spot where it would be so cant tell if its under there. in the pic bellow
ok so do i need to match the part no. on my gearbox as there are diferant ratios? this is totaly cofusing me now. started of thinking i just need an aw50-42le now its got all complicated. aaaaaaahhhhhhh what gearbox do i need?????????? |

Basically the type of autotransmission is an AW50-42LE. You then have different final drive ratios depending upon the model of 850 it is fitted to. These are as follows B5252S (2435cc 10 valve) 2.74:1, B5204S (1984cc 20 valve) 3.16:1, B5254S ( 2435cc 20 valve) 2.74:1 and finally B5234T ( 2319cc 20 valve Turbo) 2.54:1. You really have to get a box from the same model as yours . Fit the wrong one and you will either have rapid acceleration and no top speed or rubbish acceleration but you would eventually get up to an extremely high top speed.
